Streetlight Tramp
streetlight tramp
stuck on a minor key vamp
they met in a dive bar
not far from harvard yard
a table for two
checkin’ out the view
laughs and smiles with you
just north of nowhere
every-man is ever-there
and fully aware
and though this life has
days and nights
wars and strife
both New York and Boston
are filled with light
they touch the same beautiful sea
and are full of friends like you and me
so if you’re in a rough place
this one goes out to you
I once heard
a wise woman say
this being human thing
is like being a hotel
every morning
they ring the bell
some checking out
and some checking in
some smile
some frown
everyone gets a room-key
and it's ok with me
who and what
will tomorrow bring
both happy and sad songs
I’m grateful to sing
check them in
and check them out
none stay for long
so I welcome them all
then the up’s and down’s
brighten my smiles
and soften my frowns
